Toothbrushing Monkey
G had her very first dental appt this morning. I've heard tell that their first appt should be around the age of two shortly after all their baby teeth come in, but a friend told me that the first visit usually involves simply poking around, trying to build a good first impression; so we waited. And actually, we might have waited even longer if, upon leaving Alaska, the pediatrician hadn't mentioned that he thought he'd seen a bit of gingivitis. Naturally, in the interim, we started making a point to brush G's teeth for her, no more dilly-dallying, shirking our duty as it were.
We had a time convincing G that the dentist's office wasn't going to be a horrible experience – Drew showed her a little YouTube video of a two-year-old going in for her first check-up; I think it might have made things worse –, but at least we didn't have to drag her in, kicking and screaming. In the end, Drew had to sit in the chair with G in his lap. They decked her out with a pair of pink sunglasses (above); demonstrated all their neat little tools and gadgets, including spraying the water gun; watched a video of a monkey brushing his teeth, and learning to do it the correct way; counted all her teeth and then polished them; sent her home with a baggie of the requisite toothbrooth, toothpaste and floss, and a slinky toy; and then billed us an arm. On the bright side, she doesn't have any cavities or gingivitis, although they told us to take extra care in future to brush the teeth in the back.
