MRI: Results

I just had a nice long chat with the neurologist about Z. Among other things, her MRI came back normal, so that's one less worry. The only thing now is keeping an eye on her seizure-free status. Dr A said there's a possibility that we might see breakthrough activity when she starts to gain weight, in which case, we have plenty of room to maneuver with an increase in dosage or changing medications. (Though all anti-convulsants have side effects, Topamax has a higher rate of tolerance than most.) Otherwise, they'll try weaning her in a year to see how she does, and go from there.

I've also been curious to know about the ketogenic diet as a means of treating Z's seizures, so Dr A gave me the 411 on that. KD candidates are usually older because of the strictness of the diet, a modified Atkins high in protein and lipids, and have difficult to treat seizure which is being unsuccessfully treated with a cocktail of high dose drugs. Simply put, for now, it might be easier just to stick with the drugs.
