Eats

We've been enjoying delicious home cooking, thanks to Wong PohPoh, and getting in some street-eats here and there. (G just got over a fever last night so we haven't been out much.) Unlike in the U.S., restaurants, businesses, and residential dwellings are all jumbled together here, so one wouldn't have to go far for essentials in the city, esp late at night or as a last minute on-the-way-home kind of thing. Oftentimes, there's at least three or four convenience stores within sight of each other, sometimes all on the same side of the street. 7-Eleven has a huge presence here, to the point that the slang for convenience stores now is to call them "seven(s)".

I finally got my favorite at the local grocery store: mountain apples. Their season is just starting, so they're not totally sweet yet, but I just couldn't wait.

These are Drew's favorite: red-heart guava. Don't you wish you could smell these now? They're not very sweet like the regular guava, but they have this amazing floral aroma.

This morning we had fan tuan with only a bit of dried shredded meat to it. Sometimes the delectables make it almost like a zhong zhi, or there's also sweet options.

This is a pull-apart version of the scallion pancake – I ate the middle – more chewy-flaky than the crispy-flaky that I make at home.

Breakfast sandwiches are another of Drew's favorites, though he likes the simpler ham and egg, maybe with a bit of ro song. This one was vegetarian style with the green stuffs and a slice of sweet potato in the middle; a second sandwich had the same greenery and a sweet black sesame paste in the middle.
