Horse and Buggy

We took a little day trip over to Jamesport, supposedly the heart of Amish country (in Missouri), on Friday.

Downtown, we got a map at City Hall and decided to have lunch at the Country Cupboard, which we saw on the way into town. Right next door was Anna's Bake Shop with three Amish women behind the counter and no electricity.

Afterward we went in search of a quilt for Shiao YeePoh, who had to go back to Taiwan after visiting her daughter in NYC. Between the two of us, San YP and I picked out a pattern called the Broken Star, e.g. here, at Sherwood Quilts, which also didn't have electricity. Instead, they had gas lamps (not lit in the afternoon) and pneumatic(?) fans overhead. Our final stop (before heading home) was the Homestead Creamery – electricity and phones! in use here –, where Drew assured me that the Golden Glow, their specialty, was very tasty. (We bought a couple blocks to take home.) Sadly, they weren't making cheese that afternoon so we didn't get to see the process.

On the car ride home, while G and BB slept, Z kept herself and everyone else entertained by blowing raspberries: you can hear AhPoh and San YP snickering in the background.

Above are pictures of us waiting to see the city's 4th of July fireworks display at Legacy Park not far from our house. We got a better parking spot this year, so it may have seemed like the show was better too.

Here, we're all sitting down to a particularly tasty dinner that AhPoh prepared for us. Drew gave up making his Sunday pizza for AhPoh's meal and I think he would agree that it was well worth the sacrifice.
