Drew took G and BB to a (bull)frog gigging class, taught by the Dept of Conservation. And I quote, "It was A LOT of fun."
About 40-50 people in attendance, held at a local fish hatchery. They learned the different kind of frogs around the world (like the Goliath frog), how to identify them by sight and sound. One of their favorites is a frog that sounds like it's throwing up. Also discussed froggin' rules and regulations, like how you're allowed to catch them, catch limit (8).
They got to taste fried frog legs, which Drew thought was a cross between chicken and fish. G really liked it; BB was grossed out upon seeing the veins.
Then there was a demo on using a gig, which is a long pole with a multi-pronged spear attached to it. Ideally you want to spear the frog in the back of the head kind of where the neck would be. Frog skin is actually quite tough so gigging them takes a bit of doing, and once they're gigged they can still get away as BB learned.
And froggin' with a bow and arrow. Afterward, everyone broke up into small groups, assisted by a ranger, to look for and catch frogs. Apparently when you shine a light in a frog's eyes, they get kind of dazzled and don't move, making it easier to snag them.
Finally, the rangers helped to clean and prepare the frog legs to take home. We're having them for dinner tonight.
