The second in our series of cultural festivities this month was the Filipino Festival. (The Slavic Fest was also going on this weekend – we went two years ago.)
We met Elizabeth there and had dinner: the full combo plate had both a chicken adobo and this BBQ pork on a skewer; a heap of white rice; an egg roll and a plantain fried like an egg roll (name?); and some rice noodles (in Chinese we call them mi fen). [Updated: The noodles are called pancit.] Apart from the fried plantain, I might as well have been eating Chinese, and it was tasty!
The clear winner for at least G, Z and M – M couldn't get enough – was the cantaloupe drink.
For dessert, there was halo-halo, which reminded me of tsua bing, except they used ice chips (but it was supposed to be shaved ice?).
During the latter part of dinner, there was traditional Filipino folk dancing, including the tinikling; and at the last there was a Santacruzan pageant, where young ladies and little girls dressed in all sorts of finery, the males in their barong tagalogs, were honoring the Virgin Mary.
